A Survey on Smoking of Elementary School Students in Gumi City

Abstract
Purpose: This study was aimed at investigating the degree and the relationship of the smoking of elementary school students in Gumi City, in order to suggest a basis data for the development of smoking provention program.
Methods: Data were collected from the questionnaires returned by 995 subjects, who were 5th and 6th grade of elementary school, from March 2008 to Aprill 2008. The instruments were used the knowledge and attitude of smoking according to CDC. Collected data were analyzed with the SPSS program using descriptive statistics, Chi-square test, t-test.

Results: Experienced subjects of smoking were 16.0%, and current smoker was 4.9%. The smoking experience of 6th grade was significantly higher than that of 5th grade. The intend of non-smoking in future was 98.0%, and negative attitude of adult smoking was 84.3%. The experienced subjects of smoking prevention education were 83.5%. The knowledge of smoking was scored 15.77 on average and the attitude of smoking was scored 70.24 on average. The mean score of experienced group of smoking prevention education was significantly higher than inexperienced group in the knowledge and attitude of smoking.

Conclusion: For the protection of smoking in elementary school students, it is necessary to provide the smoking prevention education program systematically.
